"Moscow Released Me — I'll Do Better With Moscow"

As I Heard Them, Vol. 1, p. 270, no. 112

R. Michoel Dvorkin recounted that the Rebbe wanted to say the maamar HaGomel on Wednesday, the 13 th of Tammuz, in Kostrama — when people came — but a message came from Leningrad with the warning that Messing, the head of the G.P .O., had made it known that he dared not return to Leningrad. Thoughts were considered then about traveling to Kharkov or Moscow, but the Rebbe said, “We are going home. ”

Later on 3, though, when the thought arose to travel to Staraya Russa [near Leningrad] or to Malachovka [near Moscow], the Rebbe said, “Leningrad G.P .O. arrested me; Moscow G.P .O. released me. I’ll do better with Moscow. ” And he traveled to Malachovka.

The Rebbe’s mother Rebbetzin Shterna Sarah, and his wife Rebbetzin Nechama Dinah, wearing white silk scarves, accompanied the Rebbe to the train station.

The Rebbe told his mother from the coach window, “ Mama, it is true that, Hashem our G-d will be with us, as He was with our forefathers; and it will surely be, Let Him not leave us, nor forsake us.24 Then, turning to us, “ Ah, such an unnecessary trip. Nu, you’ll probably say Yevarechecha.”25

Walk Around Like the Chinese Do at Home

As I Heard Them, Vol. 1, p. 201, no. 6 · The Frierdiker Rebbe

It was after Shavuos in the summer of 5669 (1909), when the Rebbe Rashab was vacationing in Babinovitch. I came out from yechidus and the Rebbe’s son called to me from the woods around the house. “What did my father talk to you about?” he asked.

“The trip to Warsaw, ” I answered.

The Rebbe’s son walked with me and spoke at length. The focus was not to be influenced by the world, and to carry on the same as in Lubavitch. “We see how the Chinese who come here walk around the same as they do at home, for they know that at home everyone conducts himself the same way. ”
