A Kiddush While the Doctors Despaired

As I Heard Them, Vol. 1, pp. 486-488, no. 7

Continued from the biography of R. Eliyahu Akiva Lipskar:

Immediately after his arrival in Toronto from Germany, his small daughter who had been born in the German D.P . Camp became sick. Her condition steadily worsened, until the doctors lost hope that she could recover. In his pain, R. Eliyahu wrote to the Rebbe regarding her illness and requested a bracha for her complete and speedy recovery. The Rebbe responded that on the upcoming Shabbos he should prepare a communal kiddush at shul. R. Eliyahu did as he was instructed and sponsored a kiddush for the community. His daughter was in a desperate situation and he was celebrating a joyous event. The community rov questioned him in astonishment, “What’s with you, Eliyahu, have you lost your mind?! Your daughter is in such a critical condition, and you’re making a kiddush?”

Shortly thereafter, the state of her health began to improve, until she recovered completely.

Cold Water, Hot Water, Lukewarm

As I Heard Them, Vol. 1, p. 88, no. 20

I heard this story in Lubavitch:

A senior chossid in Lubavitch, in the days of the Tzemach Tzedek, related that he suffered from headaches and the Rebbe instructed him to put cold water on his forehead. It worked quite well; but after the Rebbe, the Tzemach Tzedek, passed away, it was no longer effective.

When he came to the Rebbe Maharash, the Rebbe told him that if cold water no longer helped, he should put on hot water. His headaches disappeared.

When the Rebbe Maharash passed away, he came to the Rebbe Rashab. “If neither hot water nor cold water help, you should put on lukewarm water, ” were his instructions.

"We — And All Who Hold On To Us — Will Remain Intact"

As I Heard Them, Vol. 1, p. 168, no. 51

It was a cheerless time in the Rebbe’s court. The door was open and the Rebbe Rashab was walking back and forth in the zal at 44 Brotsky [in Rostov]. He stopped himself and said, “I see no end to them (namely, the Bolsheviks ). However, we — and everyone holding onto us — will remain intact. ”
