Amalek Cannot Reach One Who Is With Chassidim

As I Heard Them, Vol. 1, p. 354, no. 56

My zeide recounted what he heard from Reb Aizel of Homil:

עמלק לך עשה אשר את זכור – Remember what Amalek did to you [on the way, when you went out of Egypt.]31

Amalek can only attack someone who is “לך – to you”32 — who separates himself from others. But one who mingles with chassidim is beyond Amalek’s reach.

  2. The verse uses the singular form of To you. ↩

"Shacharis Was Also Very Joyous!"

As I Heard Them, Vol. 1, pp. 447-449, no. 48

Continued from the biography of R. Zalman Duchman:

A week later, on Shabbos Parshas Ki Teitzei , Reb Zalman led the davening of Shacharis and Mincha with much joy in anticipation for the wedding of his son Yisroel, which was to take place in faraway Paris on Sunday.

One of the chassidim who had been present wrote a short description in his diary depicting the warm atmosphere that prevailed in 770 that Shabbos:

“At the conclusion of the farbrengen, R. Yochanan Gordon, the gabbai of 770, who was in an elated mood, told the Rebbe, ‘Since Reb Zalman made kiddush and was in high spirits he davened Mincha so joyously. ’ To which the Rebbe replied, ‘Shacharis was also very joyous!’”

The Ten Missing Pages

As I Heard Them, Vol. 1, pp. 305-306, no. 40

My zeide told three amazing stories about Reb Aizel. The first one:

At the Chalukas HaShas8 in the Lubavitcher shul in Homil, Reb Aizel had a list of everyone who had taken upon himself to learn a mesechta (tractate). He would call each person’s name and ask if he had completed it; when the person answered yes, he would call the next person.

One year, when he called someone’s name (and here my zeide mentioned the individual’s name and the mesechta) and asked whether he had completed the tractate, the person answered yes . Reb Aizel asked him a second time, and he again replied yes . The third time Reb Aizel asked him, “Did you learn it this year?”

“No, ” came the reply. “I learned ten pages of it last year before Yud-Tes Kislev.”

Reb Aizel immediately instructed those present to take Gemaros and divide the ten missing pages among themselves.

  1. Chalukas HaShas: the custom established by the Alter Rebbe for each person to learn a complete tractate of Talmud during the year — and finish it by Yud-Tes Kislev. ↩
