"I Hear a Fly's Wings"

As I Heard Them, Vol. 1, p. 39, no. 15

When the Alter Rebbe heard an infant crying in the Mitteler Rebbe’s room, he came inside — where the Mitteler Rebbe sat without hearing the cries — and asked, “Why don’t you learn from me? In the deepest meditation, I can still hear a fly’s wings beating against the wall. ”

The Frierdiker Rebbe's Instructions for the Refugees

As I Heard Them, Vol. 1, pp. 443-445, no. 45

Continued from the biography of R. Zalman Duchman:

R. Zalman was also encouraged by the Frierdiker Rebbe to care for his fellow refugees, physically and spiritually. On 15 Av 5709 (1949), the Frierdiker Rebbe penned him a letter with instructions to inform him of any address changes so that his letters would reach the chassidim, to ensure that all children had chadorim to attend, and if necessary, to give them the opportunity to learn a trade to help ease their families’ financial burdens.

"The Piece of Bread That I Have Is Yours"

As I Heard Them, Vol. 1, pp. 475-476, no. 19

Continued from the biography of R. Yisroel Duchman:

For R. Yisroel, caring for others was not just concern for those in faraway lands. Countless young brides and grooms can tell of how the collections R. Yisroel organized for them gave them the wherewithal to establish their homes. And it was not only that he gave, it was the way he gave. The recipients could sense that he was genuinely happy when helping them.

Giving was an ongoing, natural part of R. Yisroel’s life, in the style of the classic chassidic adage64, “The piece of bread that I have is yours just as much as it is mine. ” All year long, his Shabbos table was flanked by guests from all over the world.

Needless to say, his partner in all of these efforts was his wife Rochel, who worked tirelessly to provide for all the guests. And for these activities, R. Yisroel showed her the utmost appreciation and respect.

Hareini Mochel

As I Heard Them, Vol. 1, pp. 383-384, no. 7

I heard that an important rov — or perhaps a relative — from the Holy Land came to the Tzemach Tzedek and said, “Rebbe, you are angry with me!”

“What?” the Tzemach Tzedek replied. “Do I not recite the Shema at bedtime? And say: ‘I hereby forgive anyone who has angered or vexed me’!”
