Reb Pesach's Yechidus: Before Davening

As I Heard Them, Vol. 1, pp. 323-324, no. 9

Reb Pesach Malastovker described his yechidus with the Tzemach Tzedek to my zeide:

“Pesach, ” the Rebbe asked, “what do you do before davening?”

“It is already written, ” Reb Pesach answered (that is, in Likkutei Torah:11 Mikveh, tzedakah and Zohar).

“Tzedakah is a mitzvah extending through the entire day, ” replied the Tzemach Tzedek. “ Mikveh — you aren’t required to have mesirus nefesh for mikveh. And my zeide’s (the Alter Rebbe’s ) intention for Zohar was Chassidus. ”

“Say Chassidus!” Reb Hillel once asked him at a festive meal.

“Why me?! Say yourself!”

“I’m the gaon?! I’m the tzaddik?! I was by the Alter Rebbe?!”

“Gaon?” asked Reb Aizel. “It’s the Eibershter’s Torah. Tzaddik? I’m no tzaddik. And spending time with the Alter Rebbe?” Reb Aizel stood up then, and cried out, “Thank You, Ribono Shel Olam , for letting me serve the Rebbe for 19 years!”

Tzedakah Before Yechidus

As I Heard Them, Vol. 1, p. 190, no. 82

The Rebbe once said that he didn’t like people stopping him to ask his advice. “Before yechidus,” he said, “I give tzedakah and ask the Eibershter that my advice be effective. ”
